Original jurisdiction The court in which a matter must first be filed. Et al An abbreviation of et alii, meaning "and others," ordinarily used in lieu of listing all names of persons involved in a proceeding. Witness One who testifies under oath to what he/she has seen, heard or otherwise observed. Libel See defamation Quash Money awarded to an injured person, over and above the measurable value of the injury, in order to punish the person who hurt him. Parties The persons who are actively involved in the prosecution or defense of a legal proceeding, including the plaintiff or prosecution, the defendant and any "third party defendant". Bail bond an obligation signed by the defendant, with sureties, to secure his/her presence in court; Extraordinary writ A writ, often issued by an appellate court, making available remedies not regularly within the powers of lower courts. They include writs of habeas corpus, mandamus, prohibition and quo warranto.
